Irish actress Denise Gough, who is known for her roles in Too Close and Under the Banner of Heaven, may have just hit the big time.
The Clare native has found herself cast in the latest Star Wars instalment, the upcoming series Andor on Disney+ as Dedra Meero.
Of course, we’ve seen the likes of Domhnall Gleeson and Liam Neeson appear in the movies and they even used Skellig Michael to film scenes for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. So we Irish are no strangers to the beloved sci-fi franchise.
Despite it being one of the biggest film franchises in the world, Denise confessed that she had never seen it.
Speaking to VIP Magazine, she reveals: “I don’t have any Star Wars background. Like, I never watched it. I was so into Batman as a little girl, I didn’t have any connection to the Star Wars universe, really. And then I’m standing there and I have this really cool coat on and my gun.”
“I cannot believe that I’m here doing this. And then, just over the last week, like, I’d kind of forgotten it’s Star Wars, you know. And then suddenly, you’re introduced, the trailer comes out and the poster, and I’m like, oh my god, my nephews are going nuts.”
She admits that as she began filming the series on location she was suddenly like: “Oh my god, I’m in Star Wars. I wish I knew more about it.”
She jokes: “So, I’m gonna study, I’m gonna study.”
Denise is joined by fellow Irish actresses Genevieve O’Reilly, who will return as Mon Mothma and Fiona Shaw who will star as Maarva.
Speaking about her return to the franchise, Genevieve tells us: “There’s a journey to travel and I’m excited for people to hop on that train with us.”
Andor launches on Disney+ on August 31st
