Daryl McCormack has already had quite the career, working with some of the biggest names in the industry and now he’s opening up about the role that scored him that coveted EE Rising Star nomination at this year’s Baftas.
Just last year, the Tipperary native made his breakthrough big-screen role alongside Emma Thompson in the comedy-drama Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, after being hand-picked by the actress herself.
Speaking to Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show, Daryl admitted that it “all happened very quickly.”
“I was in the midst of preparing for Peaky Blinders and I had a call from my agent saying that this film had come through,” he shared.
Daryl went on to explain how he did the audition, followed by a callback before heading out for a friend’s party.
“I was just having a couple of drinks, telling people I had this big audition coming up, and I think it was about 20 minutes to midnight when I got a text from my agent saying Emma now wants to meet you in person.”
“I went straight home and I met her in Hampstead Heath the next day,” he added.
And as the saying goes, the rest was history, as Daryl received a text from Emma the next day saying: “I’ll see you on set.”

Describing the fun of working with Emma, Daryl recalled how it was “like a half day at school” in a recent interview with Elle Magazine.
“You know, the days where you’re allowed to come in wearing your own clothes, and it’s nice outside and you get an ice-cream,” he added.
“She’s an amazing friend, but also like a guardian or something.”
In Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, Darly plays a young male sex worker who is booked by Thompson’s Nancy with the result being an honest and at times heartbreaking journey of intimacy and sexual awakening.
