“We’re all cheering her on”: Bridgerton stars gush about Nicola Coughlan stepping into the spotlight

Bridgerton season three is finally here.

Well, at least one part of it. Yes, the Nicola Coughlan-led season will be dropped in two parts on the streaming service. So we have the first four episodes to devour now.

VIP Magazine caught up with Bridgerton stars Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury) and Ruth Gemmell (Lady Violet Bridgerton) to see what we can expect from the beloved period drama.

Bridgerton is back! We’ve had a bit of a break – is it lovely to return to these characters?

Golda: It’s a real honour. Once you’ve had a little bit of a break it’s very nice. The industry shut down as well for a little while, now we’re back! What struck me is how big this show is and how far and wide it has reached. We didn’t really get that when it first started because we were in the pandemic. Now we’re back, it’s really hit home how wonderful the show really is.

Ruth: Particularly this season with Nicola and Luke, they’ve been teased for the past two seasons. So it’s great to see that come to fruition.

Adjoa, you previously said that this season is for the wallflowers. Nicola as her character is really representing this time around!

Adjoa: She’s waving the flag for the wallflowers, coming into their own and having their moment in the sun. I think lots of the viewers and lots of the cast, frankly, can really relate to being that slightly overlooked person. Penelope’s supposed to stay at home, grow old and look after her mother. So it’s really lovely to see that I don’t think she’s going to do that, ladies and gentlemen! We’re all cheering her on.

And her makeover! Oh my God!

All: Oh yes!

Golda: It’s extraordinary! That’s a brilliant colour on her! Her with her red hair, the emerald dress, on the stairs!

Golda, your costume and wigs are even bigger and even more of a spectacle (in the best way possible!) this season! How does it feel to get definitely the showstoppers every season?

Golda: It was amazing! I feel so privileged to be able to wear the artistry that these people create. It’s just amazing! And it’s really fun to get to be collaborative with them. Erika Okvist, who is our hair and makeup designer, was so collaborative with me. She let me into all the fittings and to have my say at every step. It’s so important when you have a long term character that you are portraying to be able to have a say in what the audience sees and be able to tell stories through the wigs and costumes.

Ruth, you’re usually just marrying off your children each season. But this time, Violet Bridgerton has maybe a romance of her own!

Ruth: Absolutely! That was my role – that and tea! After Queen Charlotte and after two of Violet’s children have gotten married who are living very happy lives, it’s like a mirror. It shows just how much of a hole Edmund’s death had left in her life. That’s the state we leave her in at the end of Queen Charlotte. But now it’s really lovely to see her tentatively dip her toe in the water and we’ll see what happens with that!

The first half of Bridgerton season three is now on Netflix followed by Part 2 on June 13, 2024.
