The upcoming movie is based on Will Bardenwerper’s best-selling book The Prisoner in His Palace: Saddam Hussein, His American Guards, and What History Leaves Unsaid.

The book is an an account of the 12 American soldiers who guarded Hussein at the end of his life.

It looks like the film delves deep into Saddam Hussein’s life.

So how does Barry fit into all of this?

Well, he will play the role of an American soldier who was tasked with guarding Hussein in the months leading up to his trial and eventual execution in 2006.

The director of mini-series Chernobyl, Johan Renck, will direct the upcoming flick, per The Hollywood Reporter.

He said he hoped to capture “in a really immersive, authentic way” the experience of being in Baghdad in 2006 without any of the “typical tropes of a war movie.”

While the role of the dictator has yet to be cast, the director said he wants to find an actor from Iraq who can “authentically embody the role”.

As for Barry, producer Michael Parets enthused that he has “proven himself” as a talented actor who is “adept at playing really complex characters and we couldn’t be happier having him as our lead for what is going to be a challenging, ambitious and hopefully really special film.”
