It’s hard to believe, but two of Ireland’s biggest sports stars – Conor McGregor and Katie Taylor – had never actually met!
Not only are they stars on the international stage, but they also compete in the same general area of sport, which makes the fact that they had never crossed paths all the more astonishing.
That was cured last night, however, when both sporting legends took to their twitter accounts to post the same picture of them embracing, and obviously enjoying each other’s company!
Katie was obviously thrilled to meet the MMA star, tweeting “Waiting a long time to meet the main man … What a privilege to eventually meet and chat with the worlds best.” Conor was more brief in his comment, but no less complimentary, simply saying “Fighting Ireland’s Finest.”
It may not be the last time they meet this year, however, with Katie looking like she is going to be fighting in Las Vegas next month, the same city where McGregor’s much-publicised bout with Floyd Mayweather is due to take place.
Sky Sports has secured the TV rights in the UK for the world light-heavyweight title rematch between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev in Las Vegas on June 17. And it’s like that Katie will make her American debut on the undercard of the fight which will be staged in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in the city.
And having secured the WBA lightweight belt with a victory over Nina Meinke last month, Katie looks set for a hugely exciting world lightweight title in Dublin in November.
