Miriam O’Callaghan has revealed that she is set to sue social media giant Facebook.

The Prime Time presenter has been the subject of an ad for face cream, that fasley states that she has left RTE, and had been ‘axed due to erratic behaviour.”

Speaking out now, the mother of seven has revealed that she is suing Facebook for allowing the defamatory content to be shared.

“It’s gone from ‘I’ve launched my own face cream’ to ‘I have been sacked and axed because of my erratic behaviour’ as clickbait, to get people to read about this face cream and buy it.” Miriam told The Sunday Times.

“At the Dunnes Stores in Cornelscourt there’s a fish counter and lots of people, including the women coming out of mass, were telling my mum, ‘That’s a pity Miriam has left RTE to do her face cream’,” she said.

“Importantly, my 12-year-old son texted his dad two weeks ago, screenshotting one that said I had been ‘axed’ because of my ‘erratic behaviour , and had to be escorted out of the studio by producers’.

The ad, that is said to target anti-wrinkle cream users – offers a sample for €5, but if the sample is not returned within a short space of time, hundreds of euro can be taken out of the customers account.

“On so many levels this is wrong. I feel so bad about the people who have spent money on ‘my’ face cream, and there are hundreds of them.

“Dermot Ahern, the former minister for justice, phoned last week to say a family member had bought the cream.

“He had to stop the [credit] card. He said, ‘Miriam, it’s very serious. This is a scam.’”

Facebook have since spoken out on the issue, telling The Sunday Times that the ads had been removed.

“The ads that were reported to us by Miriam O’Callaghan have been removed and the relevant accounts disabled.”

“We’re constantly working to detect and shut down this kind of ad activity using a combination of automated and manual systems.”
