We might be all electioned out for 2024, but 2025 is a new year with a new challenge.
We will be electing our next Uachtarán.
Yes, after 16 years as President, Michael D Higgins will be stepping down and making way for the next leader of the country.
Rumours have been swirling about who could run in 2025.
One of those names is Tommy Tiernan.
The comedian appeared on The Late Late Show and discussed rumours that he could put his name forward to be Uachtarán na hÉireann.
“Can you imagine? We’re lucky to have an articulate, caring, principled man in the Áras,” he said, discussing our current President.
He joked: “Parts of being president, I’d love. I’d love going to matches. I’d love to take the King of Burundi to the Bally Café in Navan. I’d love that.”
However, he didn’t rule himself out entirely as when he was pressed on it, he said: “We’re very lucky to have Michael as our president and I hope that, I know that the love of the people is important to him, and I hope he feels it.
“It’s tangible, it’s present, it’s real. He’s our most respected and loved public figure, and we’re lucky.”
Patrick joked: “And that’s the Tommy Tiernan way of not ruling himself in or ruling himself out.”
Tiernan quickly said: “It wouldn’t suit me, it wouldn’t suit me.”
Well, we’ll wait and see.
