An Irish schoolteacher has written a beautiful song to raise awareness and acceptance around autism.
It was released in early April to coincide with World Autism Awareness Day, which is marked on April 2nd.
Louth music teacher, Pamela Campbell, was inspired to write the song, entitled I’m Okay, by watching three non-verbal autistic children grow up on her street.
The song is now dedicated to the memory of one of those children, Daragh McNally, who sadly passed away six years ago.
It is performed by The A Listers, featuring Zara Woods, John Praise Ogobamidele, and the Dublin Gospel Choir.
I’m Okay has been brought to life so beautifully by producer John Walsh and award-winning video director Des Mullan. The video features children, teenagers and young adults on the autism spectrum from the local community and was created to help spark empathy, conversation and greater autism acceptance.Â
Daragh’s mother, Colleen, said: “I promised Daragh the night he passed away that I would continue to be an advocate for autism. That I’d never ever let him be forgotten. This is a beautiful way of keeping Daragh’s memory alive.”
The lyrics include lines like: Â “I’m okay, I’m doing fine. I just see this world through different eyes”.
