Sligo councillor calls for Westlife gig and museum to honour the boys

It seems the people of Co Sligo want to make a little world of their own for the Westlife guys, the Fine Gael councillor even weighed in asking for a gig in the band’s hometown.

Cllr Thomas Walsh is apparently a big fan of the Irish band making his wish for a Sligo homecoming gig heard, saying there’s no reason they couldn’t have a homecoming show.

It does make sense considering three out of four hailing from Sligo town; Mark Feehily, Shane Filan and Kian Egan.

During an interview on OceanFM Thomas said: “Sligo is synonymous with Westlife. Previously they received the freedom of the Borough some time ago, so I suppose in terms of legacy, while the band is together, it would be fantastic that we would have some sort of museum or statue in place in Sligo town.”

He continued saying: “My motion has also suggested that we engage with MCD and the response from Sligo County Council is that they would be willing to engage with MCD in relation to the provision of an outdoor gig.”

He briefly mentioned something similar happening back in 2010 when the beloved Irish boyband joined Leonard Cohen on stage in Sligo over three nights in front of 30,000 fans, adding there are plenty of venues for the boys to perform around the town.

He said: “Everything is possible, we had Westlife play in Markievicz Park, we had them play in Lissadell and there’s no reason why Sligo can’t stage a Westlife gig or gigs of this size.”

And you can bet on it the lads are up for a gig because they love nothing more than a hometown show. Last year they played a New Year’s outdoor gig, Dublin’s 3Arena, Croke Park in Dublin, and Pairc Uí Chaoimh in Cork.
