It’s Academy Awards weekend, and Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard must be looking a bit like Harcourt Street on a Friday night, there are so many Irish there! As well as regular guests Colin Farrell, Chris O’Dowd and Fionnuala Flanagan, the Irish are nominated in several categories in the awards themselves.
Lenny Abrahamson’s movie Room has received gongs for best movie, best director and best screenplay, as well as a nod for Brie Larson in the Best Actress Category; Michael Fassbender is nominated for best actor for his role in Steve Jobs; while Brooklyn has received nominations for best screenplay and, of course, best actress in the shape of Saoirse Ronan.
Having lost out to Brie Larson for the award in both the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs, Saoirse will be hoping to make it third time lucky, and bag the big one! On the even of the ceremony, however, 21-year-old Saoirse has given an interview in which she reveals that, contrary to what you might think, she has actually got more insecure as she’s got older.
“When I was a kid, it felt – not in a big-headed way – but it felt like it was so easy,” she said to Interview magazine. “And the older I got, the more insecurities start to take hold of you . . . I won’t be able to do it as easily as when I was younger.”
And now that she’s nominated for an Oscar, she reveals that far from think that she’s made it, she is more concerned about the pressure to keep up the high standard that everyone now expects of her. “I’m a huge worrier as well,” she said. “The thing that I would worry about after being nominated again is, ‘How do I keep that up?’
Well stop worrying, Saoirse. Win or lose on Sunday night, everyone here in VIP Towers will still love you!
