Saoirse-Monica Jackson pokes fun at name mispronunciation during award show

Saoirse-Monica Jackson has took to Instagram, with the best response to her name being mispronounced during the National Comedy Awards this weekend.

It was a big night for Saoirse-Monica as she won for the award for Best Comedy Performance, in honour of her work as Erin Quinn on Channel 4’s hit series Derry Girls.

But while it is a massive achievement, the mood was soured slightly as the two British presenters struggled to say her Irish name. Awarding the prize to “source” Monica Jackson.

The Derry native wasn’t in attendance on the night, so didn’t get to correct them, but has taken to social media to poke fun at the situation with the help of another famous Saoirse.

The 29-year-old re-post a clip of Saoirse Ronan (who also experiences a lot of mispronunciations), from a sketch she did from American comedy series Saturday Night Live, singing a song about how to say her name correctly.

With the tune going: “It’s Saoirse with an ‘er’, not Cercie with an ‘or’, coz Cercie goes with ‘or’, not ‘er’, it’s ‘shh’ instead of ‘iss’, ‘uh’ instead of ‘ii’, simple as can be, see, ‘Saoirse Ronan’”

With Saoirse-Monica following up the video with: “I’m SEER-SHA but still what a legend”

Her Derry Girls co-star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell also posted the video to her Instagram, with no caption.

Ireland AM host Muireann O’Connell called out the mispronunciation on Friday night. While watching the awards on TV, she shared the clip to her Instagram story, saying in the background: “Lads, prepare them for the name…Morto.”

Writing: “G’wan Saoirse Monica Jackson on the class award.”

The Derry native has been receiving plenty of congratulations on earning the prestigious award. Her boyfriend, DJ Denis Sulta took to Instagram to say: “You absolute legend, congratulations”

As did Jamie Lee.

Congratulations to Saoirse-Monica on the well deserved win!
