Ronan O’Gara has paid a touching tribute to the people of Cork, after receiving a huge accolade in his hometown.
The rugby legend was awarded the Freedom of Cork yesterday following his contributions to the world of sport.
Ronan was absolutely delighted to be recognised for such an honour, adding that he was very grateful to his fellow Cork natives for their support over the past few years.
“Thanks to the people of Cork who have always backed me,” he said. “Proud of where I come from. Very humbled and honoured.”
Lord Mayor Des Cahill felt he was hugely deserving of the award, and said, “We are a city of sport. We love sport and it has been some time since a sports person was conferred with the freedom of the city.”
