We all know how easy it is to let stress get on top of us.

In fact, between work, relationships, parental duties, staying fit, maintaining friendships, community involvement and personal fulfillment, it’s a wonder most of us can even find time to catch our breath.

We soldier on, but when life can get too hectic it can start to effect your mental and physical well-being, which is when you know you have to take action.

There are of course many ways to deal with your stress, but for me personally, I find some me-time and a spot of pampering soothes my soul whenever I am feeling particularly overwhelmed.

So when Buff Day Spa invited me in to try one of their treatments following an especially busy week I opted for the the ‘ultimate relaxation experience’,the Buff Ultimate Indulgence, which consists of two hours of massages and a customised facial. AKA, heaven.

The spa is a haven of calm amongst hordes of busy shoppers (beside the Gaiety on Dublin’s South King Street) and as soon as you walk up the stairs and enter the reception, you feel a world away from the vast crowds on nearby Grafton Street.

Before the treatment, I was offered a comfy robe and led to a tranquillity room where I could peruse magazines and sip on herbal tea as I waited on my lovely therapist Niamh.

I was then led to a candle-lit room for my massage, and I had a confession: although I had been to spas for facials in the past, this was my first ever massage.

And what a first experience to have! As I lay on a heated bed listening to soothing music, Niamh started the treatment with inhalations of the salon’s Thai essential oil blend containing soothing aromas of Jasmine, Rose and Sandalwood. This helped me to focus on my breathing and made me feel totally zen.

Next up, the ‘Beautiful Back Treatment’ began, which included a customized cleanse and heated exfoliation, removing any dead, dehydrating skin cells to allow the customized heated masque to penetrate.

While the masque treated my back, Niamh performed a leg and foot massage, which instantly relieved tension and relaxed aching muscles. When the masque was removed, I had a full back massage, followed by an arm, hand and leg massage which left my body feeling totally de-stressed.

The pampering continued with my facial, which involved a double cleanse, professional strength exfoliation and a mask, and concluded with a scalp massage and inhalations of mandarin oil. Total indulgence!

I can honestly say I left feeling refreshed and revitalised, and I noted how important it is to treat ourselves like this every now and again. After all, it’s for our health, right?
