Popular Irish broadcaster passes away aged 62

This morning it was announced that popular WLR FM broadcaster Billy McCarthy had passed away after a short illness aged 62.

The news was announced by WLR in a statement:

“Waterford local radio station WLR FM is very saddened that our loved colleague Billy McCarthy has died after a short illness.”

Billy was best known for presenting Deise AM on the Waterford radio station. The programme was one of the most consistently listened to radio shows in Waterford over the past 27 years.

WLR FM Managing Director Des Whelan expressed his sorrow over the loss of his friend and colleague.

“Billy was a much loved friend and colleague of all of us here at WLR FM.” he told The Irish Times. “His untimely death is a huge loss not just to our listeners but to all of us who had the fortune to work with him for many years.”

Our thoughts are with Billy’s friends and family at this difficult time.
