The full list of nominations for the Irish Film and Television Awards 2021 has been announced, with popular series Normal People leading the way.

It was the drama that everyone was talking about last spring, and so it’s no real surprise that it has received the most nominations for this year’s IFTAs.

The series itself is up for both Best Drama and Best Cinematography. While stars of the series are up for their own awards too. Of course, given his talent it comes as no surprise that Paul Mescal who played the lead character of Connell in the series is up for Best Actor, while Desmond Eastwood and Fionn O’Shea have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Meanwhile, Sarah Green, who played Connell’s Mum in the show is up for Best Supporting Actress. Sally Rooney and Lenny Abrahamson are also nominated for the part they played in the show, for Best Script Drama and Best Director Drama, respectively.

However, it isn’t all about Normal People. Plenty of other great Irish series and films have been given well-deserved nods too, with Wolfwalkers and Dating Amber also receiving nominations.

The awards will be taking place virtually, not too far from now on Sunday the 4th of July.

Speaking about the event and the Irish film industry, IFTA CEO Áine Moriarty said:

“(it’s) about supporting Irish films and promoting the fact that this industry is growing”

“There’s great filming going on in Ireland at the moment – Disenchanted, Epic, and Cocaine Bear is filming next August as well.

“This industry is growing and it’s bringing so much into the economy. So, hopefully, everyone’s back in production and the cinemas are opening and a lot of light at the end of the tunnel, which is a fantastic thing for all of us here in Ireland.”
