Exciting news for fans of Irish crime dramas: BBC Northern Ireland and RTÉ, in association with Screen Ireland, have just commissioned two six-part series of the new drama Tall Tales & Murder.
The darkly comedic new series will star Ella Lily Hyland from Black Doves and Towards Zero, Aidan Gillen, who previously worked on Love/Hate and Kin, as well as Philippa Dunne and Packy Lee.
Co-created by Chris Addison and written by Stuart Carolan — best known for the RTÉ hit Love/Hate — Tall Tales & Murder is adapted from Caimh McDonnell’s beloved eight-book Dublin Trilogy.
Production has already begun this week with the first six-part run due to premiere in 2026.

“I’ve been a fan of the brilliant Chris Addison since The Thick of It – it’s been incredible fun working with him to bring this insane story to life,” said Stuart, the writer and one of the executive producers of Tall Tales & Murder.
While Chris added: “I’m frankly giddy with delight to get to team up with the twisted and highly original mind of Stuart Carolan to create this show.
“We’ve taken Caimh’s wonderful novel as a jumping off point and ended up with what I like to think of as a dark and delicious screwball drama.”
Sounds intriguing to say the least!

Just last year, Aidan also joined the cast of six-time Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan’s true-crime drama Re-creation, which is set to release this summer.
Based on one of the most famous murders in Irish history, Re-creation is centred around the murder of French film and TV producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, who was killed while on holiday at her vacation home in Cork in December 1996.
So, with Tall Tales & Murder and Re-creation both on the horizon for Aidan Gillen, it’s safe to say the man is showing no signs of slowing down!
Watch this space, people.
