More and more women are discussing menopause & perimenopause openly

Women in Ireland are discussing menopause and perimenopause more openly than ever before – and that’s an incredible step forward.

Experiences are being discussed among partners, friends, and parents, in a way that they never have been before… and a lot of that is due to the conversations that are happening, particularly in the media.

In 2021, Joe Duffy launched a dedicated week-long phone line for listeners to share their stories of menopause. What followed was a wave of menopause awareness that had never been seen before in Ireland – as well as the introduction of Revive Active’s Meno Active: a comprehensive menopause super supplement that appeared on shelves in health food stores and pharmacies just a few months later.

The supplement, which contains 31 active ingredients, was created after 2 years of research and specifically to support every system in the body during the menopause, from hormonal activity to brain function to the nervous system and energy levels.

Dr. Fiona Barry PhD, who was a member of the Meno Active formulation team, says: “Not only does Meno Active contain 19 vitamins and minerals to support overall health, but it also contains digestive enzymes and live friendly bacteria. This is especially important as our metabolism slows down during menopause and can cause us to gain weight.

“In addition, it contains a high quantity of omega 3, in the form of DHA, which contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function. The formulation team also added four plant extracts: ashwagandha, sage, green tea and genistein, which is an isoflavone found in soya. These were chosen as a result of evidence-based scientific research and are present in the appropriate biologically active form and at the appropriate concentration.”

12 months on from the introduction of Meno Active to the Irish market and new research has shown that 62% of women would consider taking a daily supplement to support them through their menopausal journey.

The study, conducted by Atomik Research among 1,007 women over the age of 35 who have started the peri-menopause or menopause in 2022, showed an interest in a specified supplement, but also an increased awareness of menopause in general.

This is positive news, as GP Dr Anita Sturnham comments, because menopause is “a natural stage of life that all women will go through.”

Many women are left to navigate this transitionary period alone and can often feel overwhelmed and unsupported,” she says. “The menopause marks the time where the ovaries stop releasing eggs each month and periods stop, meaning that women are no longer able to conceive.

“The average age that this occurs is 51 years but there is a period leading up to the menopause called the ‘perimenopause’ where women start to notice the impact of declining hormones on their mental and physical wellbeing. This can start up to ten years before the menopause. With improvements in average life expectancy, women can expect to live a third of their life after the menopause. The support services to guide women through this transition are often extremely limited.”

Meno Active contains 31 ingredients that support many systems in the body, including:

  • Vitamin B6: which contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity
  • Omega 3 DHA: which contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function
  • Biotin, Magnesium, Thiamine, and Iodine: which contribute to the normal functioning of the nervous system
  • Vitamin C: which contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • Chromium: which contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels and normal macronutrient metabolism
  • Each capsule also contains three plant extracts: Ashwagandha, Sage, and Genistein

It is recommended to take Meno Active for a minimum of three to six months. In consultation with a qualified healthcare professional, it can be taken in conjunction with HRT.

Meno Active retails at €59.95 for a one-month supply and is available to purchase from health food stores, pharmacies nationwide and on the Revive Active website.
