When the Irish bound together, there’s nothing we can’t do!
Last year, our country did us proud with the likes of The Banshees of Inisherin, Bad Sisters, An Cailín Ciúin and An Irish Goodbye ruling the award shows with their endless nominations.
And it looks like 2023 and 2024 will be no different with an array of gripping movies to be released starring the best of the best in Irish talent.
One such movie includes the Night Boat To Tangiers, which is based on Kevin Barry’s 2019 novel of the same name.
The movie follows Maurice and Charlie, a colourful pair of gangsters from Cork in Ireland who are in Spain looking for Maurice’s missing daughter
The story takes place within the walls of a terminal building at a Spanish port over a 24-hour period, with the criminals reminiscing about old haunts and old flames.
Two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender will play Maurice Hearne, while Domhnall Gleeson is set to portray his partner Charlie Redmond.
Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga is also set to play the role of Cynthia, the brains behind the criminal misdeeds and a woman whose relationship with both men is tempestuous.
Barry will be adapting the script himself, while Oscar-winner James Marsh (Man On Wire, The Theory Of Everything) has been announced as the director.
Speaking previously about the project and script James shared how it was a “beautiful” piece of writing.
“Underneath the dazzling surface wit and propulsive storytelling, there are surprising and very moving emotional undercurrents to be discovered. The story is built around love and tenderness amidst all the macho posturing and violence and the female characters are as strong and powerful as the men,” he added.
Night Boat To Tangiers is set to be shopped to prospective distributors in Cannes in May.
