Ireland features heavily in the new season of “Who Do You Think You Are?” and sure aren’t we only delighted!

The BBC series helps celebrities trace their family trees to discover their ancestors’ footsteps and heritage.

First up we have The Spice Girls’ Melanie Chisholm aka Sporty Spice discover more about her Irish roots.

Although Melanie hails from Liverpool, the singer traces her family lineage back to Ireland and “unearths a political activist and the story of how her family survived the Great Famine in Ireland,” according to a BBC press release.

Mel C isn’t the only star to trace her heritage back to Ireland as presenter and comedian Paddy McGuinness also had some surprising discoveries of his own.

And while it doesn’t come as any surprise, given his name and the fact that both his parents hail from Tipperary, Paddy also learns about his “grandfather’s crucial role during World War Two and investigates his McGuinness surname in Ireland, discovering he nearly wasn’t a McGuinness at all.”

Sure you learn something new every day!

This isn’t the first time a celebrity has been directed towards Ireland, as Boy George formerly investigated his own extensive Irish family several years ago.

He even visited Glasnevin Cemetery and the Gravediggers pub for a sing-song with Lankum.

Also appearing in the new series will be Line of Duty star Vicky McClure, singer Olly Murs, former EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis, reality star Gemma Collins and Olympic gold medal winner Jessica Ennis-Hill.

An official date has yet to be confirmed but we do know the new season will kick off on the BBC later this summer.

Until then, maybe it’s time we learn about our own heritage…
