Maïa Dunphy has opened up about grief.

The presenter has been open about her journey through grief after losing her mother in February of 2022.

“I hate funerals I absolutely hate funerals. I never want to I would go to one again,” Maïa tells VIP Magazine at the eir Power of Women Awards.

“My mum’s funeral was the worst day of my life.”

She admitted that she never thought about posting online about her grief, it just came naturally to her as she needed a place to vent.

“Sometimes I think when you have a high following on social media you forget that you’re sharing with a lot of people. It wasn’t intentional. Grief is just very raw and for the first few months, I found it astonishingly difficult.

“It was never actually intentional, I just wanted to share pictures of her and tell people how wonderful she was. Other people got in touch to say that that’s what they felt like doing as well. I think you must do what’s right for you.”

She went on to say how important it is to speak about loss as it can be shrouded in shame.

“I think it’s really important. Once you know somebody then it’s a part of who you are and I don’t think you ever get over it like a little bit of you is missing and you just keep moving on.

“Things like [hosting the eir Power of Women Awards], you know, my mum would have been delighted, texting me saying ‘That jacket is too big’, and I’d be sending her pictures backstage. The alternative to not moving forward is standing still and that wouldn’t be good for anybody.”

Maïa is moving forward, telling us that she is currently working on a children’s book.

“It’s a children’s book that I started working on a long time ago, and then I parked because of my mum and a lot of other reasons, but I am getting it back up and running now because the person who was looking out for me said, ‘Are you going to get back to it?’. And I said, ‘Yes I will, I will’.”

She didn’t share the plot, but we can’t wait to read it!
