Kathryn Thomas has revealed that her mum had a lucky escape from a horrific terrorist attack in Tunisia.

Writing in her Irish Daily Star column, Kathryn said that her mother had been on a solo trip across North Africa and Tunisia was the last destination on her agenda.

Her mum, who is a keen history lover, had made it her mission to visit the Bardo Museum and two days after she left, 22 people were shot dead in the very place.

“On Monday March 16th my mother walked out of the Bardo Museum at 3pm and flew home. Two days later, 22 people were killed when two gunmen stormed the museum and opened fire,” Kathryn said.

The Operation Transformation host also revealed how her mother had actually noticed the lax security presence in the museum during the time of her visit.

“My mum recounted how she walked straight past a security guard  asleep in the shade at the Bardo, paid the entrance fee and went through to the museum with no security screening.”

“Islamic State (IS) later claimed responsibility – just as they have done on the most recent horrific attack in the coastal resort of Sousse which has left 38 dead, 3 of them Irish”, Kathryn said.

“Without a doubt security should be ramped up. It was and is up to the Tunisian government to do everything to protect its citizens and its tourists”, she added.
