Des Bishop has revealed some devastating family news, admitting that he’s arrived back in Ireland to look after his very sick mother, Eileen.
He has spoke out about her health, explaining that since she underwent major surgery in November, she thought she was able to look after herself – but she has since deteriorated and ended up with some serious injuries.
Speaking to The Star, Des revealed, “I have major family stuff going on. The real reason I was home was that my mother’s not well. For the last year she’s had problems.
“She had a tumour removed from her lung. It seemed like it was going to be pretty routine but there’s been nothing but problems ever since.
“She fell down the stairs and broke her neck in March and she just fell again and broke her hip last week.
“It’s basically just been a battle. It’s been a terrible time for my mother. Because she’s such a fighter, she has struggled to accept her situation and her lack of mobility so that has led to other accidents,” he said.
Des admitted that despite it being such a hard time, it has brought his family even closer together as they’re all rallying around each other trying to be as supportive and helpful as possible.
“It’s tough. It sucks. Myself and my brother Aidan are basically tag teaming back and forth, but we have lots of help and family there. It’s just important for us to be around,” he said.
Des is no stranger to the harrowing illness, as he overcame testicular cancer himself in 2000, but sadly his father passed away from lung cancer in 2011.
