Paul Mescal’s mam Dearbhla is grateful.
According to her hat anyway.
The former Garda has shared a positive cancer update on social media.
She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer that forms in white blood cells, in 2022.
She took to Instagram to update the world with her health journey.
“It’s been a moment. 365 days of moments to be exact,” she wrote.
“This day last year I came home from the most incredible Berkitt Ward at St James’ Hospital following my stemcell transplant. I continue on my journey with the amazing team in Unit 6 at The Beacon Hospital. I am blessed beyond words.
“I cannot believe where I am, where I’ve been & most excitingly where I am going. My immune system is on the up & my energy is climbing. I am so thankful to all those who mind, hold, love & care for me. You are my forever people. Now with gratitude, hope, loads of joy & a sprinkling of courage let’s find out whats next?!”

What great news from Dearbhla!
Paul recently spoke about his mother’s health, telling Australian journalist Thuy Ong: “It’s out in the world now and my mum’s doing great, but at the time that we were filming it, I found out that my mum had become quite sick.
“It’s so interesting now, looking back. I wasn’t able to process it at the time, but my body was processing it in kind of real time.
“Like in the scene where Andrew [Scott] talks about the death of his mother, I was just going to work thinking it was fine and I was just going to get through it.
“Grief is an amazing thing because it has nothing to do with your head. It’s a physical thing. In my head, I was like, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine,’ and Andrew was, as you would expect, utterly generous with all of that.
“But something that I’ve learned about grief is that it’s a physical thing and you can say that you’re fine in your head, but it has to manifest itself some way.”
