Daniel O’Donnell has opened up about how he coped with Majella O’Donnell’s cancer battle.

The country singer’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and it was a shock for both of them. However, Daniel admitted on The Late Late Show last night, that although it was a worrying time, they both kept a positive mindset throughout and looked forward to a four-month cruise once Majella was finished her second course of treatment.

After Majella’s second treatment, I said to her, that once all of this is over, we’ll take some time out, just the two of us together so we headed off on a four-month cruise once she was finished all of the treatments.” he told Ryan.

“It really makes you stand back and realise that life is short. (Now) We’re very lucky, Majella’s health is great, thank God and we have no reason to think otherwise.

“You have to have great positive thoughts, and you don’t let yourself think about anything other than ‘everything is going to be fine’.

“The cruise was a great thing to do and we enjoyed it immensely. We count ourselves lucky that we had the time to do it and we could afford to do it.”

The Donegal native decided to take 18 months off to be by his wife’s side while she was ill, and he was delighted he had the means to take a hiatus and focus solely on Majella.

“But when you’re in the middle of it – and that’s when I decided to take the break – I said, how does anybody know what’s bothering you at the time.” he said.

“It could be anything. We were lucky that we were able to take the time and able to afford it. We have nothing to hold us back from doing it.
