Could future Lord of the Dance shows be in danger of cancellation?

Future performances of Lord of the Dance could be at risk amid serious allegations made against its creator, Michael Flatley, in ongoing High Court proceedings.

Michael Flatley has been accused of attempting to “hijack” the hugely successful Lord of the Dance tour in order to divert funds to support his personal finances.

The allegations are contained in sworn affidavits submitted to the High Court in Belfast by Switzer Consulting Ltd, the company currently responsible for running the multimillion-euro tour.

Switzer has been granted a temporary injunction preventing the dancer from interfering with the tour in any way.

The company claims that any disruption could be “catastrophic” for the cast, crew and production team who depend on the show for their livelihoods.

According to court filings, Switzer alleges that Flatley attempted to have promoters, including Aiken Promotions, redirect deposit payments directly to him rather than to the company managing the tour.

It is claimed this behaviour could place future shows in serious jeopardy.

Music producer Joe Gallagher, a director of Switzer, said he became involved in reviving the tour in late 2022 and described a significant turnaround in the business since the company assumed control.

Mr Gallagher alleged that Flatley has continued to receive royalties from each tour, but claimed recent interference by the dancer was linked to financial difficulties.

He further alleged that Flatley had attempted to involve a newly formed company, Feet of Flames, in running the shows.

The court was told that such actions could ultimately result in cancellations if promoters refuse to engage directly.

Flatley has been notified of the injunction and is expected to respond when the case returns to court.
