Brian Kennedy has opened up about what can only be described as hard year, revealing he suffered both a heart attack and Covid. Speaking on RTE 1’s Today Show the singer was remarkably positive in his outlook, despite going through such a difficult time.
After being diagnosed with cancer in 2016, the star underwent a nine hour operation, made a full recovery and was given the all clear just last year.
Then, in June of 2021 Brian shared that he had a heart attack.
After noticing a pain in his left side, he took himself to the hospital to get it checked out. Sharing the remarkable story on the show he said; “I walked myself over, with the heart attack, over to St James’s A&E, staggering and – it’s a wee bit of a building site, so it’s a wee bit tricky.”
“Within 15 minutes I was seen by this lovely nurse, and she hooked me up to all these machines and all of that. And she came back and said, ‘You’re having a massive heart attack’.”
Continuing he said; “I was told your heart muscle is working at 30%, I nearly fell off the bed. I said to her ‘am I going to die?’.”
Brian then went on to have a quadruple bypass in July and has thankfully recovered from the op. However, whilst he was in recovery during the pandemic he ended up catching Covid too.
“It’s hard to know where I caught Covid from but I got it anyways. I was very worried I’d have to end up back in hospital.”
Thankfully the Belfast singer has recovered, and is incredibly positive and optimistic considering all that has happened to him over the past few years; “I was really unwell for about two weeks and now I’m 90% better.”
“As I always say, there’s always someone worse off than me.”
