After the huge success of Sally Rooney’s first tv adaption, Normal People, it’s of no surprise that another one of her hit novels is set to become a TV series. Conversations with Friends was Rooney’s debut novel, released in 2017. Followed shortly after by Normal People in 2018.
Speaking in a recent interview with Heart FM, Normal People’s co-director Ed Guiney revealed that the team behind Normal People are will be working together on the adaption of Conversations with Friends.
“We’re adapting Conversations with Friends as a television series,” explained Ed.”It’s the same basic team, Lenny’s [Abrahamson] going to direct it and is across it as an EP [executive producer]. And Alice Birch and all of us at Element [Pictures]. So, in a way, that’s what we’ll be turning our attention to next.”
Conversations With Friends is expected to be another 12-part series for BBC Three. Although there’s no official synopsis of the TV show just yet, the novel follows two college students, 21-year-old Frances, an aspiring writer, and her best friend Bobbi, who also happens to be her ex-girlfriend, and the unexpected connection they form with a married couple, Melissa and Nick.
As for a continuation of Normal People, we won’t see what happens next for Connell and Marianne any time soon. “Maybe down the line we’ll come back to Connell and Marianne,” Ed added.
Adding to this, Oscar nominee Lenny Abrahamson, who previously revealed that he has “a fantasy” of revisiting Marianne and Connell when they’re 10 years older — “it’d be good,” he noted.
