Dermot Bannon blows home owners away on Room to Improve

Room to Improve came to an end with a bang on Sunday night.

Dermot Bannon headed out to Santry in Dublin to help Ann Brannigan and her husband David Mooney create their dream home.

And it was really a smash for the finale with one viewer saying that it was the “favourite house of the season”.

She bought the sentimental home from her grandfather and they wanted to update it to make it their dream home.

Although they loved the home, they felt like the space was intuitive to what they needed especially as David works mainly from home and did not have work space.

Dermot planned to remove the side extension and replace it with a new building with a bike store, a utility room and a bathroom.

The existing office and sitting room were replaced to be a flexible space that will eventually become a bedroom and living room for Anne’s mum.

A new extension was added to reach out into the garden that included a home office, a kitchen and a large family living room.

He also added a dining room, made the master bedroom bigger with a walk-in wardrobe and created a spacious guest room in the house.

Of course, there was plenty of budget issues as originally the couple would have to spend €781,000 for what they wanted. However, Dermot was able to get it down to €596,000.

However, due to many complications, they had to spend €628,000 on their renovations excluding the garden room and landscaping.

When Ann and David saw the finished project, Ann burst into tears.

“It’s really overwhelming. Much, much better than I thought was possible,” David told Dermot.

“He’s not an architect, he’s an artist. He’s passionate. He loved what he’s doing. He’s brave.”

What an emotional end to the season!
