Former Love/Hate star, Robert Sheehan is set to return to the stage!

Yes for his next project, the Irish actor will star in the stage play of the black comedy, Withnail and I.

Directed by the double Olivier Award-winning Sean Foley, Robert is set to play the lead in the stage adaptation of Bruce Robinson’s 1987 cult tragicomedy at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre alongside actors Adonis Siddique and Malcolm Sinclair.

For those who are unfamiliar with the film, the story follows two out-of-work actors — the anxious, luckless Marwood and his acerbic, alcoholic friend, Withnail as they spend their days drifting between their squalid flat, the unemployment office and the pub.

However, when they take a holiday “by mistake” at the country house of Withnail’s flamboyantly gay uncle, Monty, they encounter the unpleasant side of the English countryside: tedium, terrifying locals and torrential rain.

It’s not long before the two end up getting into enough trouble to put them off the idea of visiting the area ever again.

Sharing the cast announcement, the venue said: “We are excited to announce the talented cast for the much-anticipated stage adaptation of the iconic comedy Withnail and I!

“Hilarious, tragic, and wild, Withnail and I premieres here at The Rep on Fri 3 – Sat 25 May 2024.”

The original film was based on an unpublished novel by Robinson and was produced by Handmade Films, with Richard E Grant, Paul McGann, and Richard Griffiths leading.

The stage adaption will, however, see Robert take on the role of Withnail while Adonis will play Marwood and Malcolm will play Uncle Monty.

The show will premiere at Birmingham Repertory Theatre, with performances from 3 May until 25 May 2024.
