Paul Mescal previously shared how he would love to act in a rom-com in the future.

Specifically with Ayo Edebiri, who has been claimed as Irish after a series of hilarious interviews.

Rumours swirled earlier this month that the pair would be appearing in the film adaptation of Emily Henry’s novel, Beach Read.

And now we have a promising update…well kind of!

The rom-com author told Variety: “I can’t confirm or deny anything with casting for any movie. I will say that those are two of my favourite ‘Irish’ actors.”

She went on to say that she does think that they would be a good fit for her characters! So we’re taking this as a positive.

“I think that they would be amazing. I actually saw them being discussed [online] for several different roles — and I definitely have a favourite,” she added.

Three of her novels – Beach Read, People We Meet on Vacation (published as You and Me on Vacation here in Ireland) and Book Lovers – are currently in the process of being adapted. However, none of the scripts have been completed.

So it looks like we will have to wait a bit longer for a Paul rom-com.

Beach Read seems to be the favourite for the pair to star in, especially after Yulin Kuang, who is writing and directing the film version, reshared a picture of Paul and Ayo together on her social media.

The book follows January Andrews, a successful romance novel writer, who is struggling after the death of her father and the discovery that he was having an affair. To reset her life she moves to a beach house next door to Augustus Everett, her former college rival and now an acclaimed literary fiction author, himself.

Obviously sparks fly between the two. And we think that Paul and Ayo would be perfect for the job.

The Maynooth man was also connected to Book Lovers as the screen adaptation is being produced by the same people behind Aftersun, the film that earned Paul his first Oscar nomination.

Well we’re keeping our eyes peeled.
