It made headlines around the world nearly 3 years ago when the then 20-year old Dungannon woman, Michaella McCollum, was caught trying to smuggle nearly €2m worth of cocaine out of Peru, along with her friend Melissa Reid.
The pair originally claimed to have been kidnapped and forced to carry the drugs when their lives were threatened, only to then admit to the charge and get prison sentences of over six years. Michaella, however, was released less than half way through her sentence last week, though she will be forced to stay in the capital, Lima, for the next while as part of her conditions.
RTE have got the big interview that everyone was looking for, however, as they will broadcast their chat with Michaella on RTE1 tonight at 9.30pm. They have already issued a press release about the show, giving us a taster of what we can expect. In the documentary entitled ‘Prison in Peru’, Michaella will talk bout her nearly 3 years of being locked up, and how she had “forgotten the things that everybody takes for granted in life. Seeing the sun, seeing the darkness, seeing the moon and the stars, things I haven’t seen in almost three years.”
Michaella promises to talk frankly about her decision to try and smuggle the drugs out of Peru, describing it as a decision in a moment of madness,’ but insisting that “I’m not a bad person..I want to demonstrate that I’m a good person.”
It looks like being an unmissable show, to be sure to tune in at 9.30pm tonight!
