Pat Kenny was honoured with the IFTA lifetime achievement award at last weekend’s glamorous ceremony, for his outstanding work in broadcasting.
Many big names took part in a video montage for the Newstalk presenter, telling stories about their friend and colleague. Those who appeared in the tribute included Ryan Tubridy, Enda Kenny and Celine Dion. However, one broadcasting veteran was noticeably missing.
RTE’s Gay Byrne didn’t feature in the video, and also didn’t make an appearance at the awards ceremony itself. Speaking to the Irish Sun, Gay revealed that he was unwell last week which meant that he couldn’t take part in the celebrations.
“I went to bed on Sunday at 4am and woke up on Monday morning and I was a very sick man. For the first time, I had a ferocious attack of hiccups – that’s why I didn’t do a video inset for Pat.
“But I send him heartfelt congratulations. This (award) is long overdue,” he said.
We hope Gay is feeling better.
