After referring to a number of Irish stars as British, including Saoirse Ronan, Michael Fassbender and Colin Farrell, the London Critics’ Circle had to change a number of categories of their awards following huge social media backlash.
The Irish stars were listed under the categories of British Actor of the Year and British Actress of the Year.
Michael received a nod for his role in roles in Steve Jobs, Macbeth and Slow West, while Colin Farrell was nominated for his role in The Lobster and Miss Julie.
Saoirse Ronan was is also up for the Best Actress award for her roles in Brooklyn and Lost River.
Twitter users were appalled that the London Critics’ Circle had opted to call the Irish stars British, with one saying, “Seriously, how did you work out that Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan and Michael Fassbender were British? #AllIrish”
While another said, “London Critics, the problem? They’re not British. Call the category ‘Best British and Irish Actor’, in that case.”
London Critics’ Circle has since said agreed to change the name.
