Skin health: Everything you need to know about microbiome friendly skincare

First and foremost, we’ve got to explain microbiome.

Basically, it’s a load of tiny organisms living on and inside your body helping to regulate your immunity internally, and fight off irritation and inflammation on a surface level.

“They are like microscopic soldiers protecting and defending us daily,” says Michelle McDonald, founder of Sasta Skin Health.

“Most of these microbes live in our gut, which we call the gut microbiome. Each area of our body has its own unique microbiome of microbes, which includes good bacteria, fungi and viruses.

“Our skin microbiome is a community of microbes that lives on our skin. They feed our skin and stimulate our skin’s immunity. A balanced, healthy microbiome is essential to clear, even and glowing skin.”

Not only that, but as the skin is our largest organ – and acts like a shield – if it’s not treated correctly, it could have adverse effects on the rest of our body.

Michelle says, “If we are constantly exposing the skin microbiome to toxins and chemicals (from our skin care/our environment) or if our skin barrier is not healthy from poor nutrition, this will have a knock on effect on the health of our gut.” We don’t want that!

External factors including UV damage, pollution and even the overuse of certain products including those with active ingredients can alter the skin’s PH level and knock the microbiome levels off but probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics which nourish the skin’s good bacteria can get it all back on track, so look out for those on the label of your beauty products.

Easy does it though, and remember, less is sometimes more!
