Summer is almost over – and what better way to accept this entry into autumn than booking yourself a cheap and cheerful trip away?

If you’re anything like us, summer is always a spenny time of year, but just because you’re trying to save a little money, doesn’t mean you can’t head away for a long weekend.

In fact, you can do so and probably spend less than you would in Ireland – literally.

Check out some spots we’re putting on our *to travel* list this autumn, that absolutely won’t break the bank.

1. Valencia, Spain

A city rich in architecture, history, and markets galore, Valencia is Spain’s sustainable hub, and perfect for a quick trip this autumn.

Take a stroll along the beaches or cycle through the city gardens before settling somewhere for the afternoon with a delicious paella and Spanish beer.

You can get a small bottle for just over €1 in some bars. Need we say more?

2. Prague, Czech Republic

Ah, Prague, what a city. Whether you’re going for the scenic city views, the gorgeously preserved architecture, or the abundance of pub crawls, you’re bound to have a nice time here.

The spot is one of the cheapest to visit in Europe – nab yourself a hostel room for about a tenner, some very reasonable street food, and a beer that costs less than water, and you’re laughing.

3. Portimão, Portugal

The Algarve is nothing new when it comes to cheap and cheerful travel, but if you’re looking for somewhere new (and a bit busier) to check out, make Portimão your next destination.

Gothic, stylish, and super close to a load of beaches, this city is quickly becoming a fav among the Irish – especially those looking for a night out or two.

4. Krakow, Poland

Spend your money wisely this autumn and book a stay in Krakow, Poland’s medieval hub.

Beautiful plazas, tasty street food, and a buzzy nightlife (did we mention there’s cheap beer?), Krakow’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of Europe’s hidden gems.

5. Bratislava, Slovakia

Nestled along the banks of the Danube, Bratislava is surrounded by vineyards, mountains, and gorgeous cobbled streets.

The city is fast becoming more and more popular for travellers, as it’s walkable, pretty, and a lot more relaxing than a lot of its neighbours.

6. Vilnius, Lithuania

Often lauded as Europe’s cheapest city breaks, Vilnius has got everything you need for a quick trip away.

A gorgeous Gothic quarter, winding streets, and a renewed focus on art and culture, this city is ideal for the history nerd and food buff alike. They’re big on potato dumplings there – yum!

7. Athens, Greece

It’s very easy to do Athens on a budget, so why not make the Grecian capital your next weekend stop?

Not only are there BC landmarks, ancient temples, and beautifully preserved art, there’s also sun, sea, and so much to do in this civilisation from another world.
