Ruth Negga is set to pick up the prestigious Rising Star Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January.
This award is one of many indicators that Love/Hate actress will be nominated for an Oscar for her role in Loving.
Loving has received huge critical acclaim since making it’s debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May – and recently the Irish actress was tipped as a favourite for an Oscar nomination for her incredible performance in the movie.
The Hollywood Reporter’s resident film buff, Scott Feinberg recently shared his predictions for Oscar nominees and he picked Ruth as a front runner for Best Actress. He has put her up against Emma Stone (La La Land), Annette Bening (20th Century Women), Viola Davis (Fences) and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins).
Loving tells the story of an interracial couple who are sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 for getting married -which is prohibited under Virginian law. Ruth plays the leading role of Mildred, a determined, strong character who is intent on challenging this law.
Confirming her Rising Star Award, festival chairman Harold Matzner said, “Ruth Negga’s performance as Mildred Loving is one of the year’s most luminous and striking portrayals….This will certainly be just one of many breath-taking performances in a long career.”
Unfortunately, Loving won’t be released in Ireland until 3rd February 2017 – but as you can see it’ll definitely be worth the wait!
