A parish priest has lodged a written complaint with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland against The Late Late Show, as he claims the show featured “disrespectful” religious comments.
The episode in question aired on January 6th and featured outspoken comedy hip-hop duo The Rubberbandits, and Fr Kevin McNamara claims that he was “hurt beyond words” after listening to the Limerick natives describe the Eucharist as “haunted bread”.
Writing in his parish newsletter, Fr Kevin said the comments were “an all-time low” and he believes it’s time to put a stop to people disrespecting religion.
“On The Late Late Show of January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany, there was a discussion in which the Holy Eucharist Holy Communion was referred to as ‘haunted bread'” he wrote.
“During a discussion about whether religious practice long in decline, might be on the rise, comedian David Chambers, who performs as ‘Blindboy Boatclub’ in the comedy duo ‘The RubberBandits’, said that young people attending Midnight Mass at Christmas were “not going there for haunted bread, but because it was a family event,” he continued.
“Isn’t it time we paid attention to creating a clean environment for soul, heart and mind? It hurt me beyond words to see Eucharist ridiculed on RTE’s so called flagship chat show.”
Speaking about the complaint to The Irish Sun, a spokeswoman for RTE said,“We won’t be commenting. The BAI compliant process is under way.”
