Kathryn Thomas is the proud mother to her two girls – Ellie and Grace.
The presenter has opened up about her fertility journey before welcoming her daughter Ellie in 2018.
She explained that she went down the IVF route after struggling to conceive.
“We had IVF on both girls. We were three years trying to have Ellie, which was a lot,” she explained.
Speaking on the A Little Birdie Told Me podcast, she went on to say: “I’m somebody who, I always said, was very optimistic. My personality was always, ‘This will happen – I can make this happen, I’ve no problems just solutions’.
“The longer it went on, the resolve it starts to chip away and it became all-encompassing. Deep down I felt it would happen, I never stopped believing. But did it become harder.”
She continued: “We actually even went to an adoption meeting, I just said I need to know our options. And when we tried IVF I said, ‘If this doesn’t work now, that is it’.”
She admitted that they were “very lucky” to get pregnant with their first child after one round of IVF. However, she went on to say that she wasn’t able to “relax” throughout that pregnancy.
Kathryn then explained that she ended up having to have an emergency c-section.
“Once I was huge and ready to go, I was going in for my last two week scan, and the girl who was doing the ultrasound and she said, ‘When are you due?’ and I said, ‘Two and a half weeks’ and she said, ‘This baby is coming sooner than that’. And that was that,” she admitted.
“There was a big rush. I ended up having an emergency section. The placenta, there was no amniotic fluid around her head. I was so scared when that doctor said to me that day… I just saw her face drop.
“And I just went, ‘I need this child safe in the world – I couldn’t care if you have to cut me from the top of my head to the tip of my toes, just make sure she’s safe’.”
In 2021, three years after Ellie’s arrival Kathryn underwent IVF with her husband Padraig McLoughlin once again and welcomed their second child Grace.
“We were extremely lucky,” she explained.
