Jenny Greene has opened up about the difficulties of coming out as a gay woman in the entertainment industry.
The 2FM DJ said that she delayed coming out publicly for fear of it having a negative impact on her work. Jenny had just started presenting with Nicky Byrne and was worried she’d just be known as “the gay DJ.”
Speaking to the Irish Mirror 34-year-old Jenny said, “There was a lot going on in my head. It seems laughable now, but I was worried that people would be talking about me.
“Because I’d started doing the daily show with Nicky, I knew there would be a lot of interest. I was worried that I’d be identified as ‘the gay DJ’, and that would be the main thing about me, when it isn’t. I’ve been doing this for a long time.
“It’s funny, it feels like a different life now. It’s important to remember that time, though. Sometimes I might look at other people and be like, ‘It’s not that big a deal, just deal with it.’
“But when you are going through it, you can’t see outside of yourself,” she said.
Thankfully when the radio star did decide to come out as in a relationship with her now wife Kelly Keogh, it was well received and her career is continuing to soar.
