Gay Byrne’s wife, Kathleen Watkins has revealed that the legendary broadcaster has returned from hospital after a week-long stay, and she’s thanked well-wishers for their influx of support since he announced he was suffering from cancer last week.
Last Sunday, the 82-year-old told listeners of his Lyric Fm show that he would not be hosting the programme the following week, as he’d be in hospital receiving treatment for cancer.
“I shall not be with our listeners on this day next week.” he said. “Have to go to hospital this week, they think they may have discovered a bit of cancer in the prostate and they think it may have moved up into my back.”
Yesterday, Kathleen revealed that they should know more now about the course of action for his treatment upon his return home, and she thanked the people of Ireland for their unflinching support during this difficult time.
“I want to really say a big thank you to the nation for the deluge of cards, and well-wishes and phone-calls and everything else, beautiful messages and loving messages for Gay and he really appreciates it all and so do we in the family,” Kathleen told Live95 fm.
“He’s spent the week in hospital and he is coming home today and from today we will know what the treatment is.
“People have been so wonderful, I mean the support has been just amazing.
“Of course there isn’t a friend or a family any of us who hasn’t been touched by cancer in this country. And the treatments nowadays as you know have improved greatly and the important thing, I suppose, is for people always to be having a check up.”
We wish Gay all the best with his recovery.
