Gay Byrne revealed that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer on his Lyric FM show this afternoon.
The legendary broadcaster told listeners of the show that he would not be hosting his programme next week, as he’ll be in hospital receiving treatment for the disease.
“I shall not be with our listeners on this day next week.” he said. “Have to go to hospital this week, they think they may have discovered a bit of cancer in the prostate and they think it may have moved up into my back.”
Gay Byrne is currently on the front cover of VIP, having posed for a photoshoot with his wife of 52 years, Kathleen Watkins. In the interview, Gay and Kathleen spoke at length about their remarkable relationship, and Gay joked about how his wife may have trouble dealing with the attention she will now be attracting, having just published her first children’s book.
“I don’t know how she’ll be able to handle it,” he joked. “I don’t know how she’ll handle the worldwide fame. I’ve handled it all my life, but I’m not sure about her!”
Kathleen and Gay are the same age, both look remarkably young, and Kathleen explained one of the secrets to their longevity. “Gay was always a much more serious walker than I. He would do hours. He just loves walking, and indeed cycling a bit as well.”
The 82-year-old went on to say he’s had a fantastic broadcasting career and thanked listeners for their well wishes. “I’ve had the most wonderful, fantastic, robust, good health all my broadcasting life.” he said. “It’s my turn now … Many, many people much worse off. Thank you for your good wishes,”
Our thoughts are with Gay, Kathleen and their family at this difficult time, and we all wish Gay a speedy and full recovery.
