The Stella cinema in Rathmines, which first opened in 1923, is currently undergoing a huge refurbishment to bring the old building back to its former glory. It closed down 12 years ago, and now it seems the cinema could be open as early as July.
Some of the features of the refurbished cinema will include armchairs and blankets, with food being served to you in your seat, meaning there will be no more frantic dashes to the confectionary stand when you realise you haven’t bought any popcorn. There will also be a cocktail club, located upstairs where the old dance hall used to be.
Sold in 2015 for€1.75 million, the cinema is now under the management of Press Up Entertainment, the same group that owns well known Dublin night spots The Workman’s Club and The Dean.
Press Up Entertainment have said that they are using pictures of the original interiors and structures to inspire their revamp, so you can definitely expect some old school glamour from the place. The partitions and additions from the 60s, 70s, and 80s have been stripped away inside the building to reveal its beautiful original features, which are being restored to their former glory.
As the cinema will be showing mainly blockbuster films, we can’t wait to get a look inside and settle in to enjoy Hollywood’s next big thing!
