Cillian Murphy misses out on Critics Choice Awards

We’re absolutely devastated!

Cillian Murphy missed out on a Critics Choice Award on Sunday night.

The Cork man was nominated in the Best Actor category for his role in Oppenheimer.

And despite buzz about our Cillian absolutely sweeping award season, he failed to pick up the gong on the night.

The award instead went to The Holdovers star Paul Giamatti, which we have to say was well deserved.

And despite Cillian not be honoured on the night, Oppenheimer went on to win big!

In fact, it took home eight awards…and yet, none for the lead actor…

Christopher Nolan won the award for Best Director, and the film also won Best Picture, while Robert Downey Jr won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Lewis Strauss.

But Cillian took it all his stride and seemed to have a good night!

Of course, we can’t mention Oppenheimer without talking about Barbie! The pinktastic flick picked up six awards including Best Comedy, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Song for I’m Just Ken!

The TV categories saw Succession, Beef and The Bear dominate in the major awards. And Ireland even got a shoutout despite Cillian not winning.

Ayo Edebiri, who won Best Actress in a Comedy, thanked her family in Barbados, Nigeria and “Ireland in many ways.”

During an interview last year, Ayo joked about playing Jenny the Donkey in The Banshees of Inisherin and put on a dodgy yet adorable Irish accent.

And since then Ireland has accepted Ayo as one of our own.

The Twitter account Film in Dublin jokingly congratulated Ayo on her BAFTA animation, writing: “Congratulations to Ireland’s own Ayo Edebiri for her nomination for the 2024 BAFTA Rising Star Award.”

She reposted this onto her Instagram Story with the caption: “go dรญreach” which translates to “absolutely”.
