Despite announcing his retirement from RTÉ earlier this summer, Bryan Dobson is set to return to our screens this week for a brand-new project.
Bryan first joined the national broadcaster in 1987 and went on to present some of the station’s most iconic shows.
However, he decided to shake things up back in May when he shared news of his retirement.
Now, however, it looks like the veteran broadcaster will narrate a new documentary called Around My Island, which follows Irish solo sailor Tom Dolan as he endeavours to be the fastest person to sail single-handed around the island of Ireland.
The documentary joins the sailor on board his boat to follow his attempt at making history, while at the same time hearing of the childhood trauma that motivated him to chase success.
The show will also touch on Ireland’s triple world record holder, Pam Lee, who smashed the double-handed record for sailing the unpredictable and perilous route around 700 nautical miles of Ireland’s spectacular coastline.
This is just one of five new documentaries that will air on RTÉ this month.
While all five promise to focus on unique Irish stories, “reflecting on the failures and triumphs of our past, examining the challenges faced by our communities, and paying tribute to our vibrant culture”.
Anocuing his retirement at the time, Bryan said: “After 37 fantastic years with RTÉ the time has come to move on. I will miss working with some wonderfully talented and hardworking colleagues.
“RTÉ journalism depends on teamwork and I have worked with some of the very best
“I am grateful too to the listeners and viewers who have given me their time and attention over the years. I hope to have repaid that trust with reporting that was relevant, fair and accurate.”
Around My Island is set to air tonight, Tuesday 6 August at 9.35pm on RTÉ One.
