Everyone has that one service that they cannot live without and for us, it’s our nails. There is nothing like a fresh set of nails to complete a look.
Making you feel a million times more put together and ready to take on the day. These days however, it can feel as though there is an endless list of the types of manicures to choose from. Between BIAB, acrylic and gel nails the list goes on.
After the trials and tribulations of getting my nails done consistently over the last few years, we have come up with a guide to help choose the right manicure for you.
Acrylic
This is the hardcore stuff. Acrylic nails are created by the nail technician skilfully mixing powder polymer with liquid monomer and applying the paste to the natural nail. This sets and creates an extremely strong fake nail which can then be filed into the desired shape and length.
This manicure should last around four to five weeks and is perfect for someone who is looking for long and durable nails .
The service will most likely take around 1 ½ – 2 hours and on average will set you back €60.
As acrylic is such a heavy duty manicure, it can overtime become slightly damaging to the nail. Therefore it may be best to take a break from this style every so often or only get them for specific occasions such as a holiday.
Gel
Gel manicures are often mistaken for shellac. In short shellac is a gel polish by the brand CND. They are just often confused. Gel is almost like the next step up from your regular nail polish. It is applied to the natural nail and set under a UV lamp.
This is chip resistant and will make the nail feel stronger than it would with your typical polish.
Gel manicures only take around 40 minutes and cost around €30. The polish should last for about two to three weeks.
BIAB
BIAB, also known as protein or builder gel on the other hand is perfect for anyone who is looking to start their healthy nail journey. This service is suitable for everyone, but it can be particularly useful for anyone who has trouble growing out their nails or has a habit of biting them. It is slightly thicker than your standard gel polish and it acts as a protective shield over the natural nail.
After the nail technician has prepared the nails they will apply the desired shade of builder gel and then allow it to set under a UV light.
This manicure should last around four weeks. This service is slightly shorter than the acrylic nails as it will only take about an hour to complete. On average BIAB usually costs around €40.
Aftercare
Although we are sure whatever service you decide to pick will no doubt look fabulous on you, it is important to look after your nails yourself. Try not to remove them at home or peel off your stunning designs. Nails salons will remove them for you at your next appointment.
Most nail salons will provide all of these services, it may be worth asking your nail technician what they would recommend for.
