Amanda Brunker has opened up on the trials and tribulations of being beautiful, saying it “has been a curse”.

In her recent column in The Independent, Amanda claims that it’s not easy being a pretty blonde in today’s society, calling it a burden even. She explains that at 41, she is used to this kind of sexism, but it never fails to aggravates her.

“Being gifted with a pretty face has been a curse at times. A burden even. Add blonde hair and large breasts into the mix and well, it’s near impossible to get anyone to take me serious,” she writes.

But the former model said that her looks opened a lot of doors for her, following her Miss Ireland win when she was 17. People thought that she was just a pretty face, but since her win she has managed to have longevity in her career which expands over the fields of journalism and television.

She has learned to use her beauty to her advantage, “people have pigeon holed me as the stereotypical ditzy blonde without even talking to me, but being deemed attractive has never been a curse for me.”

Although Amanda admits that people were right to judge her during her “wild heyday” when she was partying and falling out of nightclubs, but those days are gone she says and it’s time to stop judging people by what they are on the outside, and start seeing what’s inside.

“But I’m still here because of my brains, my ambition and my determination to succeed. So let’s stop focusing on what’s on the outside and start practicing what we preach to our children – it’s what on the inside that counts.”

She added: “Being beautiful is not akin to being born with a birth defect. If anything, it’s a gift. Being attractive opens doors. That’s a fact. If people can’t take someone seriously after that – well, that’s a separate problem that requires some personal reflection.”
