Alan Hughes and Karl Broderick open up about the difficulties they’ve faced while trying to plan a family together.
The pair have been together for over twenty years. They had a civil ceremony almost four years ago, and plan to officially marry this coming September.
Karl has now opened up about how the couple’s plans to have a family, revealing they were once told they couldn’t adopt.
Speaking to The Herald, he said, “I’m kind of glad that we didn’t. We weren’t really allowed. We weren’t afforded a chance to do it whether we liked it or not, and now I think people would say we’re too old.”
Although the singer admitted that the pair had wanted children, they’re now happy with how things worked out.
“I don’t think I’m too old. I’m 19 at heart. It’s not something I’ve felt I’ve ever really wanted. I think Alan might have at one stage, but he’s over it.
“For years I’ve gone through wanting kids and then not wanting them. Then when I’ve not wanted them I’ve gone ‘thank God I didn’t have them’ and then I think, ‘what if I had had them in a period when I wanted them?’
“We have great nieces and nephews and we’re godparents for loads of kids,” he said.
The Cheerios panto director also expressed his love for Alan, saying that the TV3 presenter makes him laugh everyday.
“I think he’s phenomenal, he keeps saying to me he’s really proud of me and that’s really lovely to have him say that to me.
“He makes me laugh every single day. He’s very funny,” he said.
These two are adorable.
