2FM lost Al Porter to rival station Today FM because they were unable to provide him with the money and prime-time slot he wanted.
Al is fast becoming one of the most sought after and recognisable comedians in Ireland but, unfortunately for 2fm, his elevated celebrity status means they can no longer afford to secure the 24-year-old as part of their line-up.
Head of 2FM, Dan Healy described Porter as a “brilliant and dynamic broadcaster” but admitted his station could not compete with Today FM’s resources.
“Today FM have deeper pockets than RTE and they can write cheques.” he told the Irish Independent. “And we couldn’t provide him with the prime-time slot he wanted.”
However, a spokesperson for Al said money had not been a deciding factor and he chose Today FM because they offered him a lunchtime show.
Al, who previously co-hosted Drive with Colm Hayes, has said he was in talks with 2FM to present his own show, but nothing materialised.
“I was willing and ready to be able to make something happen with 2FM but it just didn’t happen.” he told the Irish Independent.
Last month it was announced that Al would take over the lunchtime slot on Today Fm – and he’s very excited to start his new show.
“I am looking forward to being in their homes every day, not as a comedian but as a friend.” he said.
Al will present his first lunchtime show tomorrow, February 13th at lunchtime on Today FM.
