28 Years Later director clarifies if Cillian Murphy will be in the film

Cillian Murphy

28 Years Later is set to hit cinemas this summer, the third instalment in the zombie franchise.

Of course, the first film was led by the one and only Cillian Murphy.

Rumours had swirled that the Cork man would be returning for this new flick.

Now the film’s director has set the record straight on Cillian’s return.

After the first trailer for this film, aptly set 28 years after the rage virus broke out, fans were concerned that our Cillian would be playing an infected.

However, it looks like that isn’t the case…for now at least!

Director Danny Boyle has confirmed that Cillian will return to the franchise. But not in this film…

“It’s three films, a trilogy of films which have connecting characters. He will run right way through the films. We’ve shot the first two back-to-back, and that was for logistical reasons, actor availability reasons, and for story reasons as well. They’re literally continuous,”  Danny told IGN.

He confirmed that Cillian will be in the second part of this trilogy – 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple which will hit cinemas in January.

“[Cillian] is in the second one… I shouldn’t give away too much, I’ll get killed!”

He added: “We haven’t got the money for the third one yet. It will depend on how the first one does, I guess. But hopefully, if we do ok, they’ll give us the go-ahead for the money and for the third one. Everybody’s standing by for that, really. Including Cillian.”

28 Years Later will hit Irish cinemas on June 20th, while 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is set to come out on January 16th, 2026.
