British rock star Rod Stewart is in Ireland at the moment, as part of his From Gasoline Alley to Another Country: Hits 2016 tour. The singer played at Belfast’s SSE Arena on Tuesday night and is set to play Dublin’s 3 Arena this evening.
While on his travels from the north to the capital, the Maggie May singer made a pit stop at Dundalk’s Oriel Park. Rod is a big fan of League of Ireland minnows’ and wanted to see where Stephen Kenny’s team play.
A witness who was at the stadium when the 71-year-old singer stopped by said that the visit was quick and he posed for pictures with fans.
“There was only a few people standing around when suddenly this big, blacked- out people carrier pulled up.
“People couldn’t believe it when Rod Stewart suddenly got out. Apparently he just wanted to see where Dundalk played because he was passing on the motorway.
“He hung around for a few minutes outside the ground and got a couple of pictures taken. He must only have been there for about ten minutes, then he left.
“He was gone before anyone at the Lilywhites even realised he was there. They probably would have done something special if they knew he was arriving.
“It just goes to show the type of attention that Dundalk’s run in the Europa League is attracting — even the world’s biggest rock stars are taking an interest,” he said.
